A New Generation of Leadership

Seniors' Strategy

A society that fails to honour seniors is a failing society. Our seniors need improved mental and physical health support. Period. And as we are developing policy and budgets, we must have seniors, caregivers and family members at the table providing direct input. Some items to explore are: -expanding access to affordable and healthy home meal delivery programs; -regular remote contact with others via courtesy phone check-ins -video technology training allowing them to better connect with their families and friends from home -walkable sidewalks and accessible parks -easily accessible and up-to-date information on all available programs.

Seniors would like to age in place but many do not currently have that option due to expense and inaccessibility.

  1. Work with the provincial and federal government to offer funding to upgrade homes (i.e. accessible bathrooms, ramps, air conditioning, etc.) to make existing homes safer and more accessible for seniors.

Issue: Seniors can be stranded in their neighborhoods (transit deserts) due to insufficient accessible transit programs.

  1. 1. Proposal: Work with Kingston Taxi Commission to provide vouchers for seniors to use when they need to travel within Kingston with a timely reimbursement to taxi drivers.

Issue: Senior housing and supportive housing are in high demand and short supply and the waiting list is close to a decade long.

  1. Fund the development of 100 percent affordable senior and supportive housing rather than requesting private developers set aside a certain percentage of units in luxury developments.

Issue: Food insecurity and often food that is provided to seniors is not culturally appropriate.

  1.  Start indoor community gardens in senior centres to provide opportunities for seniors to take part in providing themselves and their neighbours with fresh produce. Senior centres should also be given the resources to provide daily meals for clients in person.
  2. Fund a program to ensure that meal delivery is nutritious, high-quality, culturally appropriate and meets dietary restrictions as needed. Explore opportunities to partner with existing local food delivery organisations for distribution.

Issue: Elders abuse and fraud

  1. Work with all levels of government to fine-tune the mechanisms currently in place to address reporting, intervention, and wrap-around support for all forms of elder abuse.

This is only meant to be a starting point for addressing seniors’ issues. I would like to see much greater coordination of existing resources with the care and quality of life of seniors in sharp focus. I intend to work with everyone I possibly can to improve the wellness and living conditions of our seniors in their homes and in the community.
